1 NOTE !Zelpha Coalt lists him as a veteran of the War of 1812 but if he is the
2 CONT father of Michael, Jr., he would have been too old for the War of 1812 but
2 CONT could have participated in the Revolutionary War and not his son Michael, Jr.,
2 CONT Michael, Sr., was recorded in Greene Co, OH, as being there as early as 1803.
2 CONT In early days, if two men had the same name, the older one was referred to
2 CONT as Sr. and the younger as Jr. and they did not have to be father and son.  The
2 CONT older Michael resided in Kentucky before 1800 as son James was recorded as
2 CONT being born in Kentucky ca 1797.  There is a record of a Michael Spencer
2 CONT marrying Elizabeth Molohon 31 Jan 1800 in Washington Co, KY.
1 NOTE !Source forgotten but recorded a Michael Spencer christened 25 Aug 1734 whose
2 CONT parents were Thomas and Deborah Spencer.  They had a son named Michael born
2 CONT 31 Jan 1762.  He married Mary Platts 17 Feb 1785.  This Michael jr. was supposed
2 CONT to have died 29 Aug 1840 in Sagbrook, Middlesex, CT.  Only the date and
2 CONT location of death of Michael, Jr., does not jive with our Michaels.  The dates
2 CONT of birth agree with the approximate dates of our Michaels and Michael Jr.'s wife

1 NOTE !SOURCE: Zelpha Coalt.  He was a Private in the Fifth Battalion, Pennsylvania
2 CONT Militia, Washington County (1781-1783).  He served 101 days and was severely
2 CONT wounded by a shot fired by an Indian.  He served in Captain Jacob White's
2 CONT Third Company (as resident, Fallowfield Twp.).  He was on a Pittsburg Payroll,
2 CONT Misc. Reel 78, page 45, on the `Roll' of Lieut. David Enoch.  Early census
2 CONT records list Michael in Kent Co, Rhode Island.  He and his wife, Mary, had
2 CONT children, natives of Kentucky (VA):  Francis, Thomas W., Deliah, Asa, Joseph,
2 CONT James W., Sarah, Isaiah, and Ann.  The family emigrated to Ross Twp, Greene
2 CONT Co, in the early 1800's, purchased 1000 acres on 25 Sep 1815, the whole of
2 CONT survey V.M.S. #786, on the waters of the Little Miami River at the cost of
2 CONT $1350 (290-acres were lost for taxes).  He died and is buried on his farm
2 CONT (3 miles east of Cedarville, OH (Greene Co, Ross Twp).  Several other family
2 CONT members are buried there. (There isn't any markers to identify our Michael's
2 CONT `plot'.)  His son, Francis, is buried in `Spencer Family Cemetery' on farm
2 CONT at 2539 Harrison Road, Darke County, OH--Many other descendents of Michael
2 CONT Spencer are identified on the tombstones (many stones are broken and overgrown).
2 CONT The `Spencer Family Reunions' were held nearby this Cemetery far into the

2 CONT land from James Fowler 30 Sep 1815 & recorded 19 Oct 1815 - 710 acre,
2 CONT 786 mil plot cost $1350. 1850 census showed value of real estate as $3000.
2 CONT His age in this census is shown as 53 making him born in 1797 or 8.  There
2 CONT are two listed living with family not identified - Mary Fisher age 35 ??
2 CONT (age marked over so not clear) born in Ohio and Emaline Grey age 15 born in
2 CONT Virginia. These later two may have been housekeepers with six sons still at
2 CONT home. James' family were living in Ross Twp, Greene Co, Ohio, at this time.
1 NOTE !Naomi Hendrickson & husband about 1984 visited Greene Co, Ohio, and wrote to
2 CONT Bernice Sheumaker Abarr.  Feb. 1984--"On my trip to Iowa, I had John stop at
2 CONT Xenia and Cedarville, Greene Co, Ohio.  I zeroxed all I could on the Spencers.
2 CONT Went to see the 1000 acres of land our forefathers bought.  It is 3 miles east
2 CONT of Cedarville.  I'm convinced he must have come into an inheritance to have
2 CONT bought that much land.  It is the flattest in that area & most fertile.  Michael
2 CONT Spencer had lived in that area for some time with wife, Mary, and children.
2 CONT I never did find his or Mary's burial place but did find the beautiful burial
2 CONT area of their son, James W. Spencer and his wife, Sarah White.  The Whites
2 CONT married into the Spencer family a lot and lived just west of the Spencers,
2 CONT nearer to Cedarville.  Just west of Cedarville is the most beautiful scenery of
2 CONT Ohio.  The Spencers bought their 1000 acres from the Starkes Military Tract for
2 CONT over $5000.  It must have taken about all of Michael and Mary's money because
2 CONT they had to sell 280 acres of it to pay their taxes.  The rest was passed on
2 CONT to their large family - James inherited that part where his parents had their
2 CONT home.  Three of James & Sarah's sons died before marriage as attested on the
2 CONT side of the tall shaft marker for their father.  Thomas W. Spencer and his wife,
2 CONT Amanda White, have an identical shaft to the east of his parent's shaft.  So far
2 CONT I have found no hint of where Michael and Mary came from or who their parents
2 CONT were.  "This compiler, LSE, also visited these graves in June of 1991.  Death
2 CONT dates of three of sons with ages are ingraved on three sides of stone of James
2 CONT and Sarah - Michael, Daniel, and Joseph.  This high quality tall pyramidal
2 CONT granite stone is near identical to that of son, Thomas W., ca 20 ft away.  These
2 CONT stones are near the center of Row 2.  Michael has a second stone much older.

1 NOTE !He & wife lived in Greene Co prior to War of 1812.  He served a short time
2 CONT in the 1812 War on the `Roll' of Capt Samuel Herrod.  The first 8 child. were
2 CONT born in Greene Co and family emigrated to Harrison Twp, Darke Co, in 1817 and
2 CONT settled in Sec 3, Twp 10 R 1, in the SW 1/4 of Sec 3.  Three more children
2 CONT were born there after their move to their new untrodden, wild, uncleared-
2 CONT acreage, living first in a log cabin with only mother earth constituting the

1 NOTE !There has been considerable discussion as to Jame's middle name.  Some
2 CONT of his descendants feel it was `WHITNEY'.  My mother, Ilah & his granddaughter
2 CONT and daughter of his eldest son, Ethel, steadily maintained it was `WHITLEY'.
2 CONT Ethel raised his family, including Ilah, in the former home of James W. and
2 CONT named one of his sons Lloyd WHITLEY Spencer, given the middle name WHITLEY
2 CONT to honor his father.  We know that the early Spencers came from Virginia
2 CONT and, at the time they resided there, KENTUCKY was part of VIRGINIA.  Census
2 CONT records list several Spencers living in Kentucky near Col. Wm. WHITLEY.
1 NOTE !Col. William WHITLEY was a famous Indian Fighter.  He built about 1805 the
2 CONT first horse race track in KY & home SE of Danville, KY, that is now an
2 CONT Historical feature of KY.  He wasn't overly fond of the British so declined to
2 CONT copy the design of their tracks.  The English had sod tracks with the horses
2 CONT running in a clockwise direction.  He built this first one with a dirt track
2 CONT and had the horses run in a counter clockwise direction as they do today.
2 CONT There is a bronze plaque to commerate this first track.  The most famous Indian
2 CONT of the area was Chief Tecumseh, born in GREENE COUNTY, OH.  He made many raids
2 CONT on the settlers of Greene County and the surrounding areas.  In 1812 Col.
2 CONT Whitley led an expedition after Tecumseh and both he and the Chief were killed
2 CONT in ensuing engagement.  One of his men reported that Col Whitley and Tecumseh
2 CONT fired upon each other simultaneously and both fell mortally wounded.  James
2 CONT Whitley's father was also James W. and probably had the middle name of Whitley.
2 CONT The father of James W., Sr., (Michael, Jr.) served in the War of 1812 and may
2 CONT have served some time with Colonel Whitley and named a son in honor of this
2 CONT Kentucky and Ohio hero.  Michael, Sr., served in the Revolutionary War and was
2 CONT the 1st of several generations of Spencers that lived in Greene Co, Ohio.

1 NOTE !Moved with family to Illinois in 1863.  Moved to Rice Twp, Ringgold Co, IA, in
2 CONT in 1876 by train to Afton.  At age 15 helped his father haul lumber & material
2 CONT for new home on farm east of Delphos, obtained the fall of 1875.  He became
2 CONT owner of this farm in 1907 after death of father.  He moved to Mt Ayr in 1917
2 CONT to home east of old school.  As long as LSE knew him, he had a mustach and
2 CONT chewed tobacco.  This quiet gentlemen was highly regarded by grandchildren,
2 CONT children, and friends.  His last auto was about a 1924 or `25 Model T coupe
2 CONT which he drove downtown almost up to the year of his death.  He had hearing
2 CONT problems for several years and hearing aid was not very successful for him.
2 CONT His hair was reddish as a young man and was medium height.  Ethel & Jennie
2 CONT united with M.E. Church of Eureka in 1886-93.  They united with the Christian
2 CONT Church of Delphos in 1893.  Farm was purchased by Uncle Thomas W. Spencer in
2 CONT 1855 for $1.25 per acre.

2 CONT to Ft. Collins in 1924 where he worked at the Northern Garage.   He and his wife

2 CONT He was employed by Sinclair Refining Co for 36 years in Ft Collins, Loveland,
2 CONT Denver, La Junta, and Lamar - all in Colorado.  Their first son, Delbert,
2 CONT contracted infantile paralysis (polio) in 1928. Repeated trips to Denver for
2 CONT doctor treatments resulted in moving to Denver, where John worked at Sinclair
2 CONT stations and the corporate office.  He retired from Sinclair in 1963, and worked
2 CONT for Lamar Farm Supply (J I Case dealer) for 5 years, before retiring again.
